The Global Security News: Counterintelligence from Michael_Novakhov (51 sites): Eurasia Review: China: Crack Down On Religious Funerals, Weddings

As the Communist Party of China continues to tighten its grip on the
regulation of religion and religious activity, a human rights group is
reporting that officials are disrupting religious rites and ceremonies
such as funerals and weddings that take place outside of church
buildings.

Bitter Winter, a magazine documenting human rights and religious
freedom abuses in China, reported that attendees of such ceremonies have
been threatened with investigation and jail, and in some cases have
been arrested and detained for more than two weeks at a time.

The crackdowns are part of the government’s campaign to “sinicize” religion,
bringing it into unity with Communist Chinese culture.  The report
comes just five days after Chris Smith (R-NJ), co-chair of the Tom
Lantos Human Rights Commission, told a congressional hearing that the state of religious freedom in China has “never been worse than it is right now.”

On April 12 of this year, Chinese government officials broke up an
11-person Christian funeral in the province of Henan that was honoring a
deceased member of the congregation. Officials accused attendees of
“hiding” their actions in the countryside, and threatened them with jail
time, according to Bitter Winter reports.
The police registered the personal contact information of the attendees
and told them that they could be investigated at any time.

In February, in another city in the same province, officials
interrupted another Christian funeral for an elderly person. Local
authorities reportedly threatened attendees with arrest for holding a
religious service outside of a church building, and the attendees
dispersed.

Bitter Winter reports that interrupting religious funerals dates back
to at least 2017, when a pre-funeral Christian ceremony, also in Henan,
was interrupted by officials who declared the activities to be
“illegal.” All of the 20-some attendees were detained. Some were
released shortly thereafter due to old age or illness, while six
attendees were held for up to 15 days in custody.

Also in April of this year, in the province of Jilin, a Taoist temple
director was arrested at his temple after someone posted a video online
showing a prayer ceremony honoring martyrs. Tipped off by the video,
officials investigated the temple on April 17. While the director had
obtained the necessary permit to hold such an event, officials told him:
“Even if you have a certificate, it’s still unacceptable. You’re
deceiving the common people, and this is illegal,” Bitter Winter
reported.

Chinese officials also attempted to block a wedding at a church in
Henan by requiring attendees to write their names down in a registry,
and by disallowing any other festivities outside of the church and
banning attendees under the age of 18. A church director told Bitter
Winter that he thinks the regulations were put in place to dissuade
people from planning weddings in the church. The March wedding was
cancelled after the restrictions were put in place.

At another wedding, on May 1 in province of Shanxi, a Christian
couple was arrested by police for requesting a band to play Christian
songs at their son’s wedding, Bitter Winter reports. They were only
released from police after local village officials vouched for the
couple.

The crackdowns on religious ceremonies are just the latest in a long
list of reported abuses against religious freedom in the country.
Chinese government officials have also set up mass internment camps for Uyghur Muslims, and have destroyed churches, burned down crosses, restricted religious expression online, and have attempted to re-write the Bible so that its message is more in line with the Communist party, among other abuses, officials have reported.

Last week, the Vatican issued new guidelines on the government’s
requirement of registration for church clergy. The Vatican said it
respected the judgement of Chinese Catholic clergy in whether or not
they wanted to add their names to the registry. Registration allows
clerics to practice their ministry freely, but it also means that they
acknowledge the government’s efforts to “sinicize” religion.

The Vatican stated that clerics should register only if they specify
that they are doing so insofar as the document that they are signing is
“faithful to the principles of Catholic doctrine.”

The Catholic Church in China is divided between the underground
Church, which is loyal to the Vatican but operates without government
permission and whose ordinations are not approved by the government, and
the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association (CPCA), which is
government-sanctioned.

In September 2018 the Vatican and Beijing reached an agreement known
as the China Deal that attempted to bridge the divide between the
underground Catholic Church and the CPCA. The deal allows the CPCA to
choose a slate of nominees for bishop.

The controversial agreement, while seen by some as a step to a united Church in China, has been criticized
by other church leaders and human rights advocates as attempted to
compromise with the Communist party, which has not since let up in their
aggression towards Christians and other believers.

In April of this year, Chinese officials in the Guangdong province began offering cash incentives for information or tips on religious people and religious gatherings.

In its 20th annual report,
released in April 2019, the U.S. Commission on International Religious
Freedom highlighted China as being among the worst offenders against
religious freedom globally.

YMC-ya later!

Management has closed the Prospect Park YMCA indefinitely after discovering a chemical contamination of its water supply.

The gym — located at 357 Ninth Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues — has been shuttered since July 2. Gym employees could not confirm a date for the gym to reopen.

According to the YMCA’s website, the water was infected with the chemical ethylene glycol while they were performing maintenance on the gym’s air conditioning system.

“Ethylene glycol is used to make antifreeze and de-icing solutions for cars, airplanes, and boats,” according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. “It is also used in hydraulic brake fluids and inks used in stamp pads, ballpoint pens, and print shops.”

The YMCA is urging anyone who was possibly affected by the contaminated water to seek help.

“If you drank the water at the Y after 6:00 p.m. on July 1 and feel unwell, please seek medical attention immediately,” reads the gym’s website.

A spokesperson for Mayor Bill de Blasio — who routinely travels 11 miles via motorcade from Gracie Mansion to workout at the Ninth Street YMCA — could no immediately comment regarding hizzoner’s exercise plans during the closure.

1. New York and Brooklyn from Michael_Novakhov (111 sites): Brooklyn Eagle: ‘Close the camps!’ Protesters target federal lawmakers for failure to protect migrants

Alarmed and disgusted by the Trump administration’s treatment of undocumented immigrants at the nation’s southern border, protesters on Tuesday held rallies targeting Brooklyn’s elected representatives to federal office — including outside the Bay Ridge office of U.S. Rep. Max Rose and the Park Slope home of Sen. Chuck Schumer.

The protests were part of “Close the Camps,” a series of rallies held in cities across the U.S. to demand more humane treatment of undocumented immigrants.

Hundreds gathered in front of Schumer’s Park Slope home to demand that he take action to shut down the detention facilities and make meaningful reforms.

Protesters there held up placards in the shape of human eyes with the promise that they are watching him, and chanted “Close the camps!” and “Step it up, Chuck!”

Activist Tom Gogan cited the humanitarian costs of the child separation as his reason for coming out.

“[Schumer] is supporting more money to the border, which we do not trust is going to be used for humanitarian purposes. The camps are an atrocity and an incredible, ongoing violation of human rights,” he said. “It’s a horrible blight on our whole country.”

Another demonstrator, Theresa Mayer, said that Schumer must leverage his power as minority leader to push change.

“It’s on [Schumer] to hold his caucus together and stop this from happening. He holds the power and he could something about this and he needs to listen to his constituents,“ Mayer said.

“We are all here to tell [Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Schumer] to do their jobs; to fight against Trump’s racist fear mongering,” said another protester.

An organizer said the protest was put together within 48 hours.

Schumer’s office did not return a request for comment.

Outside Rose’s office at 8203 Third Ave, protesters chanted, “No hate, no fear. Refugees are welcome here!” as they stood holding signs.

The Bay Ridge demonstrators, some with their children in tow, said they are shocked by the Trump administration’s policies of separating children from their parents and holding migrants in cages in prison-like detention centers, which many of the protesters likened to concentration camps.

“I am here because I am an immigrant myself. I am here to support immigrants. They are not criminals,” Mary Shehu told the Brooklyn Eagle. Shehu, who came to the U.S. from her native Albania years ago, took part in the protest with her children, Detion and Debora.

The New York Times reported that inspectors from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General discovered squalid conditions in five detention centers in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas during inspection visits they paid to the facilities in June.

The inspectors reported seeing overcrowded cells, children in ditty clothes who had not showered and no hot meals, according to the Times.

Members of congress who visited a detention center were shocked by what they saw.

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat representing parts of Queens and the Bronx, said desperate migrants had no access to running water and were drinking out of toilets.

Rose has not visited a detention center as of yet.

The Bay Ridge protesters demanded that Rose, a freshman Democrat who represents several neighborhoods in Southwest Brooklyn and Staten Island, visit a detention center and work with fellow members of congress to cut off funding for detention centers and deportations.

Natalie DeVito, a member of Fight Back Bay Ridge, said Rose voted in favor of a bill to provide emergency funding for the crisis at the border, legislation that did not include oversight.

“I won’t sit idly by while child abuse is being enabled, and the people of this community will do everything possible to stop it,” DeVito told the Eagle in an email.

Rose, she said “should champion getting the camps shut down, because detention serves no purpose for asylees except to traumatize already traumatized people and squander taxpayer money to private companies who are getting wealthy from locking people up.”

In a statement the issued after the vote, Rose said he wanted to get emergency funding in place but would have preferred a stronger bill.

“[T]hat bill did not come to the floor and we were presented with a bipartisan Senate bill which possesses a large number of those protections, even if not all of the ones I wanted. But I’m here to make progress, which this bill does, and is why I voted in favor of it. I am disappointed, but I will not let the perfect be the enemy of the good, especially when the lives of children are on the line,” Rose stated.

Mary Hetteix, a Bay Ridge resident, said she is heartbroken that children have died in detention centers and wants the facilities shut down. Those who seek asylum should be allowed to stay with relatives or friends in the U.S. while their cases are adjudicated in court, she said.

The coalition of groups organizing the rally included the New York Immigration Coalition, Bay Ridge for Social Justice, Fight Back Bay Ridge, South Brooklyn Democratic Socialists of America, Yalla Brooklyn and South Brooklyn Progressive Resistance.

Rose announced that he would visit a detention center this summer.

Speaking at a press conference with fellow House members U.S. Reps. Hakeem Jeffries, Nydia Velázquez, and Carolyn Maloney, Rose called the conditions at the border unacceptable.

“It is obvious that our system is broken right now and has been for a long time. Congress should confront this crisis with the urgency it deserves. Congress should cancel recess, and any future ones, because those suffering on the border cannot wait,” Rose stated.

The White House Communications Office did not return messages.
