The Global Security News: Trump Investigations from Michael_Novakhov (85 sites): 1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump just made a huge mistake with Don McGahn

Former White House Counsel Don McGahn really, really doesn’t want to go down for Donald Trump’s obstruction of justice. He documented everything. He eagerly ratted Trump out to Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Now McGahn is preparing to publicly testify about Trump’s obstruction to Congress. Trump has responded by trying to block McGahn from turning over supporting documents. Then yesterday McGahn fired back. Now Trump has made a huge mistake.

In a New York Times story yesterday that was obviously leaked by McGahn’s camp, it was revealed that the Trump regime recently tried (twice) to pressure McGahn into publicly stating that in his view, Trump’s actions didn’t constitute obstruction of justice. It’s pretty clear that McGahn wants everyone to know that he’s not on Team Trump, even as he waits for House Democrats and Trump to finish fighting a legal battle over McGahn’s documents.

In response to McGahn’s latest move, Trump posted this whacked out tweet: “I was NOT going to fire Bob Mueller, and did not fire Bob Mueller. In fact, he was allowed to finish his Report with unprecedented help from the Trump Administration. Actually, lawyer Don McGahn had a much better chance of being fired than Mueller. Never a big fan!”

The trouble: Donald Trump is lying, and once House Democrats win the legal battle and McGahn hands over his notes, they’re going to prove Trump is lying. Not only is Trump setting himself up for failure, he’s motivating McGahn to find a way to hit back. Meanwhile, even as the battle over McGahn’s documents continues, Trump hasn’t tried to make a move to stop McGahn from testifying, because there’s no way for Trump to even try to do that.

The Global Security News: 1. Russia from Michael_Novakhov (116 sites): Voice of America: Heir Apparent: Germany’s Merkel Should Serve Full Term

The leader of Germany’s ruling Christian Democrats (CDU) and heir presumptive to Angela Merkel said she had no ambition to succeed her as chancellor until 2021 ahead of a major test of popularity at this month’s European election.

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, who last December won a party leadership contest as Merkel, Europe’s longest-serving leader, sets the stage for her gradual exit from politics, said she had no desire to accelerate the process.

“The chancellor and the government are elected for a full term and citizens are right to expect that they take this mandate seriously,” Kramp-Karrenbauer told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper in an interview. “Speaking for myself, I can rule out that I am working in my own interest for a change.”

AKK struggles to impress

Merkel, 64, has run Germany since 2005 but agreed to step down as CDU leader after losing votes in the 2017 general election to the far-right Alternative for Germany, which ran on an anti-immigration platform.

Kramp-Karrenbauer, known as AKK for short, has since struggled to make an impression. Support for the CDU is running around 30 percent ahead of the May 23 election to the European Parliament, less than Merkel’s general election tally.

“Fundamentally, the mood towards Europe is good. But European elections are always a reaction to the national situation, and this contributes to us not being seen very positively at the moment,” said Kramp-Karrenbauer.

The division of leadership roles had created room for speculation that there was a lack of harmony, she added: “That doesn’t leave the party unaffected.”

Kramp-Karrenbauer said, however, that her relationship with Merkel is “very good, as ever.”

“Now that we’re in an election campaign, on many days I speak with her more often than with my husband,” she said.

Coalition friction

While Merkel has yet to join campaigning for the European vote, Kramp-Karrenbauer also blamed the CDU’s weak showing on the poor impression created by its fractious coalition government with the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD).

We have a coalition that simply hasn’t come together and doesn’t find it easy to cooperate,” she said.

Weighing in on one issue where the two disagree, Kramp-Karrenbauer said it was high time to abolish an income tax surcharge imposed after unification three decades ago to fund financial support to ex-communist eastern Germany.

Gridlock in Berlin, against the backdrop of a slowing economy, has fueled speculation that the coalition could fall apart well before the next general election.

That would create a potential opening for Kramp-Karrenbauer, a former regional premier in the small western state of Saarland, to make an earlier bid to unite the roles of party leader and chancellor.

She said, however, that she was working toward launching a new platform at the CDU’s party conference in late 2020. Only then would the party choose its candidate to run for chancellor in the 2021 general election.

Mexican police have arrested on manslaughter charges the owner of a Mexico City school that collapsed during a devastating 2017 earthquake, killing 19 children and seven adults, authorities said Saturday.

Ernestina Godoy, the attorney general of Mexico City, said officers apprehended Monica Garcia, owner of the Enrique Rebsamen school, in a restaurant in the capital Saturday morning after receiving an anonymous tip.

“We arrested her,” Godoy told a news conference. “The crime is manslaughter,” she said, noting that police searched dozens of houses over several months.

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck central Mexico on Sept. 19, 2017, killed 355 people in the capital and the surrounding states. The school tragedy became one of the most powerful symbols of the quake’s human cost.

Authorities had issued a reward of 5 million pesos ($262,000) for information leading to Garcia’s capture.

Garcia could not immediately be reached for comment.

Experts and witnesses told Reuters shortly after the quake that the school in southern Mexico City buckled under the weight of floors added over the years with scant steel support.

Gay rights activists using social media on Saturday organized an unauthorized march down eight blocks of one of Havana’s main thoroughfares before they were stopped by police.

The march was the second by a nongovernmental organization in Cuba in slightly more than a month. That’s highly unusual in a country where the only legal civil society groups are de facto arms of the Communist government.

A handful of marchers were arrested when they attempted to push through a massive police presence and continue from the Prado boulevard onto the Malecon, the capital’s famous seaside promenade.

The march was organized largely using Cuba’s new mobile internet, with gay rights activists and groups of friends calling for a march over Facebook and WhatsApp after the government-run gay rights organization canceled a Saturday march.
